Hidden 3D pictures are called autostereograms, or stereograms for short. They look like flat, repeating patterns, but when you look through the page, your eyes and brain turn the pattern into a picture with real depth.
Your eyes sit about 2½ inches apart, so each one sees the world from a slightly different spot, and your brain turns the difference into depth. A stereogram repeats its pattern across the page. When you look through it, each eye lines up a different copy, and tiny shifts in the pattern add up to a hidden shape.
